Thoracic Force-deflection Studies in Primates?-s
نویسنده
چکیده
Thoracic force-deflection characteristics have been measured in the living subhuman primate as a step towards the analysis of cardio-thoracic injuries. Mechanisms of injury were investigated by subjecting Rhesus monkeys seated on a sled to static and dynamic chest displacements (24 tests) by means of a charge fired projectile equipped with a 3 in. dia. impact plate and compensated strain gauges. Forces up to 30 lb were developed in the static press tests for 2 in. deflections. Dynamic tests were run with similar deflections at 3 different initial impact velocities: 36-45 ftlsec, 43-57 ftlsec and 65-85 ftlsec with corresponding peak forces at 80-245 lb, 150-370 lb and 4 lo-700 lb. The thorax of the Rhesus monkey thus shows a very low linear stiffness under static loading but then exhibits a progressive change with increasing velocity, showing more of a spring-masslike response with an initial linear region of stiffness followed by a pronounced drop off. These data may thus help explain the wide disparity noted between human thoracic behavior during closed chest heart massage and that noted in full scale cadaver tests.

Thoracic force-deflection studies in living and embalmed primates.
In order to evaluate the validity of the use of the cadaver in making estimates of the living human response to cardio-thotacic impact a series of tests were performed under similar conditions comparing the force-deflection response of the anaesthetized and the embalmed Rhesus monkey. Twelve primates (100 tests) were subjected to controlled thoracic impact with a Remington Humane Stunner while ...
متن کاملMacroscopic and microscopic observations of needle insertion into gels.
Needle insertion into soft tissue is one of the most common medical interventions. This study provides macroscopic and microscopic observations of needle-gel interactions. A gelatin mixture is used as a soft-tissue simulant. For the macroscopic studies, system parameters, such as insertion velocity, needle diameter, gel elasticity, needle tip shape (including bevel angle) and insertion motion p...
متن کاملParent, 1 THORACIC BIOFIDELITY ASSESSMENT OF THE THOR MOD KIT ATD
During the upgrade of the 50th percentile male THOR anthropomorphic test device (ATD) from the Alpha level to the NT level, the low-speed Kroell hub impact corridor was selected as the design requirement for blunt thoracic impact response. Although this requirement was reiterated during the development of the THOR Mod Kit, it has been documented that the response of the thorax does not meet the...
متن کاملDesign, Modeling, and Construction of a New Tactile Sensor for Measuring Contact-Force
This paper presents the design, modeling, and testing of a flexible tactile sensor and its applications. This sensor is made of polymer materials and can detect the 2D surface texture image and contact-force estimation. The sensing mechanism is based on the novel contact deflection effect of a membrane. We measure the deflection of the membrane with measuring the strain in the membrane with emb...
متن کاملApplication of linear and nonlinear vibration absorbers for the nonlinear beam under moving load
Recently, a large amount of studies have been related to nonlinear systems with multi-degrees of freedom as well as continuous systems. The purpose of this paper is to optimize passive vibration absorbers in linear and nonlinear states for an Euler-Bernoulli beam with a nonlinear vibratory behavior under concentrated moving load. The goal parameter in the optimization is maximum deflection of t...
